Valencia CF were proclaimed LaLiga champions for the fourth time in their history, on the final day of the 1970/71 season. April 18th of this year is the 50th anniversary of the momentous occasion.
Following the title win, a limited number of commemorative coins were produced: One in 22-carat gold, in two sizes; and another in silver, also in two sizes. The gold coin shown below is that owned by Pep Claramunt, part of that historic squad of players coached by Alfredo Di Stéfano.
The coin is a souvenir of Forment's goal, Aldaya's save and the image of Di Stéfano in the dugout, nervous about the 1-1 draw between Atletico Madrid and FC Barcelona being played at the same time. That result meant that, despite the 1-0 defeat for Valencia CF in Sarrià against Espanyol, they lifted the LaLiga trophy.
